David Harlan, MD - Investigator Profile
I am interested in identifying the immunological mechanisms that underlie the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and/or the rejection organs/tissues transplanted to treat that disease. To those ends, my group utilizes molecular, cellular, and small animal models to elucidate immunological mechanisms. In addition, I have conducted clinical protocols to test whether immune modifying reagents can ameliorate disease severity in individuals with recently diagnosed T1DM. For the latter, my colleagues and I have developed a non-human primate model to test novel approaches to improve islet transplant technology. We have also developed tests to assess the biology of individual islet cell subsets.
Scientific Interests/Keywords
Pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes mellitus, rejection organs/tissues transplanted with diabetes, exploring beta cell biology
