Our laboratory is interested in the mechanisms regulating pancreatic islet structure and function during development and in pathophysiological states such as diabetes and obesity. We use large-scale image capture of the entire pancreas or tissue section and unbiased computer-assisted quantitative analyses to describe the changes in islet number, size, shape and cellular composition. We use these data and mathematical modeling to develop models of islet formation that can be tested experimentally.
