Maike Sander, M.D. - Investigator Profile
Our laboratory aims to understand the molecular mechanisms by which several classes of transcription factors coordinate development of the mammalian pancreas. During pancreas development, a common endocrine precursor cell gives rise to all four endocrine cell types, each of which can be readily distinguished by the production of a characteristic hormone. The apparent simplicity of the system makes the endocrine pancreas an ideal system to explore the roles of specific families of transcription factors in the cell specification and differentiation. Our investigation of this system aims to understand the roles of transcription factors in coordinating the appearance of specific cell phenotypes, and to gain insight into the molecular mechanisms of synergistic activation and repression of gene expression. To achieve this goal we combine genetic, molecular, and genomic approaches, using the mouse as a model system.
Scientific Interests/Keywords
