Our laboratory has a long standing interest in islet cell differentiation and the transcription factors that regulate gene expression in endocrine cells. We have recently initiated studies of embryonic pancreas development and our major focus areas are (1) to identify and characterize transcription factors involved in early pancreatic development, and (2) to understand how pancreatic development is regulated by Notch signaling. To this end we use chicken and mice as model systems. Our long term goal is to use the knowledge gained to grow beta cells in unlimited quantities in vitro.
