Joel Habener, M.D. - Investigator Profile
My lab has recently made the landmark discovery of the presence of stem cells in the adult human pancreas. In laboratory cell culture, I have applied my research experience on the interactions of growth factors, morphogens, and transcription factors to differentiate these cells into insulin secreting cells. I have discovered the insulinotropic hormone glucagon-like peptide-1, cyclic AMP response element binding proteins, and the islet duodenal homeodomain protein. I hold several patents on these discoveries. Based on this discovery, glucagon-like peptide-1 is currently in development as a treatment for diabetes.
