Jake Kushner, M.D. - Account Profile
My career goal is to improve the health of children and adults with diabetes, contributing to the development of cell based insulin replacement therapies. As a pediatric endocrinologist, I am acutely aware of the great need for regeneration of beta-cell mass for patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. However, this challenge is not trivial, as a great deal remains to be learned about the basic biology of islet growth. Ultimately we hope to elucidate the major mechanisms that control beta-cell proliferation at the cell cycle level, anticipating that some upstream beta-cell signals might be amenable to pharmacological intervention.
Scientific Interests/Keywords
Beta cell regeneration, beta-cell survival.
