Epigenetics and diabetes treatment: an unrealized promise? - May 07, 2012
Epigenetics is formally defined as the study of DNA methylation, histone modifications and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), and the mechanisms by which these modifications affect an organism’s phenotype. In recent years, it has become increasingly obvious that the epigenome plays a critical role in disease development and pathogenesis. Epigenomic abnormalities have been linked to the progression of diseases such as cancer, asthma, and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In the review by Bramswig and Kasetner, 2012, the authors highlight specific types of epigenomic modifications, define how epigenetics can mediate the development of diabetes, and suggest how a greater understanding of the epigenomics associated with pancreatic islet development could contribute to possible diabetes treatments.
